Thank You
Thank you for taking a look at my website! I appreciate you taking the time and hope you like what you see. I am not a formally trained artist but I have had many inspiring teachers both in my early school years and after retiring from my corporate career. A big “Thank You” to my high school art instructors for instilling art into my soul. Thanks to watercolorist Fred Graff and potter Randy Myers!
After I retired in 2008, I studied with Plein Air artist and instructor, Catherine Grawin. Catherine, a wonderful teacher and a true inspiration, taught me the Alla Prima style of oil painting and I was hooked. Shortly after our loss of Catherine to cancer I began painting and received instruction from impressionist painter Claudia Verciani at the CG Studios.
Painting with Claudia and many other of Catherine’s students at CG Studios was a great extension of the lessons I learned with Catherine. Soon I joined the RSF Art Guild and attended a variety of workshops and classes.
One in particular was with LA street painter and excellent instructor, Alex Schafer.
Alex’s workshop and classes brought a new understanding of the concept of the value of light for me. The RSF Art Guild has organized many fabulous workshops and exhibitions. I first saw a Toni William’s’ eucalyptus painting at the 2018 La Jolla library exhibition.
I signed up for every one of her workshop and classes after that. With the help of two CG Studio buddies, I hosted two Toni workshops in my garden. Along with these workshops and classes I’ve also had the opportunity of attending several of contemporary artist Carole Mayne’s studio classes. Her classes are as diverse as Carole’s art, and her lessons are very valuable.

So, you see I’ve been painting, studying and painting even more. I’ve been taking classes and painting. I have been watching, looking, feeling and painting. Often, I ask myself “why am I painting?” because I really can’t stop. I suppose it’s because I see so many things that are beautiful. I witness beautiful moments and feel I am truly blessed to be living here in San Diego. Through my paintings I want to recreate a scene, or that moment in time; the way arms or legs go this way or that way; the delight of multiple sides and angles of a rock; or the way light transforms a color, shape and shadow of an object. I want to understand the geometry of things so I can recreate the angle and perspective that brings me closer to understanding nature.
All the finished paintings you see here are all images I love. Those I didn’t love or only liked may end up as an underpainting that is covered with new image that inspired me. Every canvas is a lesson, which takes me down a path – sometimes a step ahead; occasionally it’s a U-turn or possibly a straight downhill run. I am always learning, painting, seeing and painting.
Thanks for taking a look!
